The Use of Liquid Nitrogen in Southern California Laboratory Research

WestAir Specialty Gases and Equipment has been producing and distributing PurityPlus® liquid nitrogen for Southern California-area laboratory use since we first began. What makes this commodity so advantagous in such a wide range of laboratory activities – particularly as a refrigerant – is its capability of maintaining temperatures markedly lower than the freezing point of water.

A previous blog of ours describes the use of nitrogen in food processing. In its compact, readily movable liquid form (which doesn’t have to be pressurized), we offer it for laboratory applications as various and sundry as …

  • cryogenics – involving the realization and study of low temperature extremes and the behavior of materials at such temperatures;
  • cryonics – the long-term protection of biological tissue (blood, reproductive cells, surgical samples, even human bodies) at remarkably low temperatures in order to ”reawaken” them and reanimate them sometime hence; also as a method of cryoconserving genetic materials;
  • energy storage (being a mechanism for it);
  • insuring that various scientific detection instruments perform more effectively; and
  • achieving lower pressures in laboratory vacuum systems.

As a coolant, liquid nitrogen is most notably employed by the laboratories we supply …

  • to achieve superconductivity in high-temperature superconductors;
  • to maintain the liquid helium cooling systems of high-field superconducting magnets, such as those used in nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers and magnetic resonance imaging systems, at an especially low temperature;
  • in cooling baths and other testing situations meant to induce extremely low-temperature chemical reactions;
  • in vacuum-pump traps; and
  • in astronomy cameras utilizing CCD image sensors.

These examples, as all-inclusive as they are, scarcely account for liquid nitrogen’s use in the laboratory. Our Southern California customers frequently have their own, singular uses for it, just as they do for nitrogen in its gaseous state – which, of course, we also produce.

The fact is, more and more scientific, medical, and industrial research facilities hereabouts are calling on us for the PurityPlus® nitrogen and liquid nitrogen they require in order to realize their research goals. They’ve found us to be a steady, easily accessible source of these commodities. And they’ve come to rely not only on our delivering them when they need them, but also on their verifiable quality, our reasonable prices, and the expert, personalized service of our people.
