Compressed Argon Gas

WestAir Specialty Gases and Equipment originates and delivers PurityPlus® Argon for various companies that require it in Southern California.

Several traits eventually led Argon to become an ideal candidate for technical jobs, such as providing a dense atmosphere in which to isolate neutrons in nuclear research, during the final years of the nineteenth century:

  • its inertness and molecular weight,
  • its relative abundance compared to other uncommon gases, and
  • its commercial workability.

Easily, the widest early use for dry, high-purity Argon was gassing the globes in incandescent light bulbs during the first years of the twentieth century. In due course, with the invention and commercial emergence of gas metal arc (GMAW or MIG) and tungsten inert gas (TIG), welding in the 1940s had to have a dense inert gas, typically Argon-based. Allowing that none of these are genuine specialty-gas purity applications, their desirability is as strong as ever and they still compose a significant piece of Argon’s sales volume.

Modern specialty gas applications for high-purity Argon include its use as a carrier or background gas in various analytical instrument applications, for example: in the exposure and assessment of trace and ultra-trace elements by means of Inductive Coupled Plasma Techniques, in Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption, and in Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. Argon is applied as well in many forms of Gas Chromatography, in particular those that use a high-efficiency Electron Capture Detector (ECD) or an Ultrasonic Detector (USD). It also serves as a carrier gas for analyzing hydrogen in helium with a TCD (Thermal Conductivity Detector) or USD. As things have progressed, Argon has seen heavier use by the semi-conductor industry as a carrier/purge gas.
